It's About Time!!!

Leadership Project Finalized

Today, we met in one of the study rooms in the back of the library in order to put the finishing touch on our leadership project. It's crazy tomorrow is already the end of the semester... What a ride!!!

Having Some Trouble Getting the Videos Up

The uploading process doesn't want to cooperate with me. I tried to upload a video, and it was still "uploading" when I got home from downtown. I tried it several more times, but it never wanted to work. I'm going to send them as an attachment and attempt to upload them on Max's laptop. With literally one day remaining in the semester, I thought you might want to know what's up.. our plan is to get them up on the blog today.

Agenda:
Today, we decided that we will reenact Solomon Asch's conformity experiment on Monday the 25th. Our goal with this experiment is to show the way in which a group can influence the individual. Asch's original experiment can be found here... Asch’s Research

Also, we continued to discuss what direction we want to go with our leadership project. During our meeting over the weekend, we will finalize our project and be ready to present on Thursday.

Questions to ponder:
What camera will we use?
Who will be the participants in the experiments?
How many times will we perform the experiment in order to get accurate results?
Where and when will the experiment take place?

Agenda

Here are some options...
1. Women beats up man
-In this experiment we will test the reaction of people as a women physically beats a man to the ground. Would their reaction be different if the man was beating the women?
2. Have someone laying on the ground on busy sidewalk
-In this experiment we will test who will ask to help the seemingly unconcious man on the side walk. We will also see how long it takes for someone to notice.
3. Non-alcoholic keg
-Allow an entire party to drink from a non-alcoholic keg. See the people's reaction, and how drunk they can act with no alcohol in their system.
4. Suicide jumper
-Have someone pretending they are going to commit suicide off of a four foot plateau. Stage the incident so its believable.
5. Best buy dress up
-Have a bunch of people dress up in Best Buy clothing and enter a busy Best Buy.
6. The human dog
-Have corey walk through the entire mall with a leash on and walking on all fours. See how people react to this obsurd scenerio.
7. Frozen Factory
-Have a bunch of people freeze in one place for a short period of time. Video tape their reactions.
8. Welcom Back
-Go to an airport and welcome back a complete stranger. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjej2V_yh5k&feature=channel_page

Agenda
Today, we didn't have much time for our group meeting. In the time that we did have we decided we are going to perform our social experiments in the next two weekends. We have narrowed down our choices for the experiments to about five possibilities. Its about time to record some footage.

Don’t Quit!

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
when he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst, that
You Must Not Quit.

Attendance/Agenda for 4/23

Present:
Aaron G.
Amy B.
Corey C.
Erica V.
Max M.

Absent: none

Agenda:
Today we need to discuss the direction of our group. Recently three of our group members have been eliminated from our group due to lack of motivation and attendance. In regards to Marciano two separate phone calls have not been returned, so we feel we need to move in a different direction. Seeing as how our original idea was to do social experiments we feel our best bet to make progress would be to fall back on that idea. With the semester winding down we need to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible. Social experiments here we come!

Looking ahead:
We will look at Youtube for insight in to previous social experiments.
We will choose a few of our own, and a few to reenact.

Uh- Oh! 4/19

We were unable to attend Wednesday's meeting with Marciano. We called him to let him know we weren't able to make it, but he still has not called us back. If we don't hear from him soon, we might have to head yet another direction with this project and we better do it fast.

Meeting With Marciano

Today (4/14) Corey and Max met with Marciano to begin our quest to help him in any way we can. We got a chance to talk about his soccer league, a walk for peace, and also a walk for immigration rights. Marciano seems very interested in having us help him as much as possible. He hopes one of our group members can attend a meeting (4/15) to discuss this walk for peace.

Attendance/Agenda for 4/7

Present:
Aaron G.
Amy B. (tardy)
Corey C.
Erica V.
Julio (super tardy----> expulsion)
Max

Absent:
Aaron B. (unexcused----> expulsion)
Ted D. (unexcused-----> expulsion)

Agenda
Today, we headed to the library in search of Marciano's number. We found it on the Resource Center for Non Violence's website. When we got back to the classroom, Max called Marciano. They discussed a plan of attack. We learned of a meeting that he will be having with soccer coaches at the RCNV on Tuesday 4/14 which we will attend. At that meeting, we hope to come up with a day we could actually help him on. Next week, we hope to have a schedule of times for helping Marciano.

Agenda:
For a large portion of the group meeting today, we considered all options for the semester long project. We thought about heading back to the social experiment idea, but when the dust settled, helping Marciano seemed like the best idea. Instead of making a 10 minute biography, we will simply help him however we can. Whether it be line fields, pick up trash, or help at a soccer camp, we will be sending group members to help (a couple of us, not everyone can make it on the same day). We will document our service and post it on here. The next step is to speak to Marciano and get an idea on what we can help him do and when. Also, we were having trouble with group dynamics today. Skye came over and had us name one thing we were doing wrong and how we could fix it... this conversation definitely helped us a lot. It's not going to be easy to make a big group of 8 people happy all the time, but we have to stick together and stay focused.

Attendance/Agenda for 3/31

Present:
Aaron B. (left early)
Aaron G. (left early)

Julio
Max
Ted (left early)

Absent: none

Agenda
Today, we further discussed our project and the direction we want to go with it.
We found out that Marciano actually came into Aaron's work over the weekend, so we got his contact information. The next step is to actually contact him, which we will do over the weekend, and get this show on the road. Basically, we want to make a 8-10 minute documentary on a man who made a difference. His story is truly inspirational, so we think showing what he is all about would really open a lot of eyes, maybe even encourage others to get out there and make some positive changes.

Another topic of discussion today was the leadership book. We originally chose Speak the Truth and Point to Hope, but it's much harder to find then we were hoping. Today, we made a group decision to swich to Viktor E. Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning for two reasons: 1.Aaron has it, and he says it's really interesting. 2.It is cheap and a lot easier to find.

Looking Ahead
Next class, we will take a group picture to put on here and work on finishing our poster. Writing down a detailed plan of action might be a good idea as well.
